This months blog is written by my dear friend Irwin Edgehill. Irwin describes himself as a trainer and personal development coach. Over the last decade he has helped hundreds of people build or rebuild their confidence and resilience in their personal lives or at work.
For my own part, when reading a book about mindfulness six or seven years ago, and struggling to cope with ongoing health issues, I realised that I had actually been teaching something very similar for at least a decade. Across many years of foraging in London it’s become obvious to me what a multifaceted practice it is, with mindfulness at its very centre and Irwin’s work with individuals and groups dovetails into my own…In fact it overlaps a great deal. So, in his own words…
Thank you John, for this opportunity to share my thoughts and ideas.
So often, we rush through the day without ever pausing to appreciate the beauty and serenity that exists all around us. Mindful Appreciation of our surroundings is a transformative practice that leads to a greater sense of inner peace and contentment. In this blog we will explore this ‘art’ of mindful appreciation and how it can help us connect with our environment on a deeper level, increase our appreciation of the natural world and at the same time, foster a sense of calm and gratitude.
The Power of Mindfulness:
Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present, in the moment and without judgment. When we apply mindfulness to our surroundings, we open ourselves to a world of beauty and wonder that often goes unnoticed in our busy lives. By slowing down and paying attention, we can discover joy in the simplest of things.
Cultivating Gratitudes:
Gratitude is a powerful emotion that can boost our overall well-being. When we take the time to appreciate our surroundings, we naturally cultivate a sense of gratitude for the world around us. Whether it’s the warmth of the sun on your skin, the rustling of leaves in the wind, or the sight of a blooming flower, shrub or mushrooms. These moments of appreciation can fill our hearts with thankfulness.
Connecting with Nature:
Nature is an abundant source of inspiration for mindful appreciation. Spending time outdoors, whether in a park, a forest, or by the sea, allows us to connect with the natural world and its beauty. Observing the intricacies of a spider’s web, the vibrant colours of a sunset, or the soothing sound of flowing water can be a profound and grounding experience.
Finding Beauty in Everyday Life:
Mindful appreciation for me is not limited to grandiose natural landscapes; it can also be applied to our everyday surroundings. Take a moment to notice the architecture of buildings, the play of light and shadow in a room, or the details of everyday objects. When we look closely, we can find beauty and artistry in the most unexpected places.
Reducing Stress and Anxiety:
Practicing mindful appreciation has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety. When we focus on the present moment and immerse ourselves in the beauty of our surroundings, our minds become less preoccupied with worries and stressors. This can lead to a sense of inner peace and relaxation.
Mindful Practices for Appreciation:
Try to incorporate mindful appreciation into your daily life through practices like meditation, nature walks, or simply sitting quietly and observing your environment, even just for a couple of minutes. These moments of reflection can help you cultivate a deeper connection with your surroundings.
Conclusion:
Mindful appreciation of your surroundings is a simple yet profound practice that can bring a sense of calm, gratitude, and joy into your life. By pausing to notice the beauty in both the natural world and the everyday, you can cultivate a deeper connection with your environment and foster inner peace. Embrace the art of mindful appreciation, and you’ll find that the world is a richer and more beautiful place than you ever imagined.
